Magnetic Leaders
There is a good chance you have been around a truly confident person at one point or another — someone who is comfortable in their own skin, trusts in themselves and their decisions, and is able to voice their opinion in a way that doesn’t second guess what they are saying. These are the people who are quietly confident without needing to be arrogant or proud — and they are magnetic. Some would say this type of person is a natural leader that everyone wants to be around.
As it turns out, true confidence isn’t necessarily inherited through good genes or a fortunate upbringing — although these aspects certainly can help to foster it. Interestingly, neuroscientists are finding confidence is something you can train your brain to learn. The good news is that the more we orient ourselves towards confidence, the more it is hardwired into the brain — which leads to a greater positive impact on those around us. Let me explain.
Self-Awareness and Your Brain
When we are confident, it not only helps us to reach our goals and become excellent leaders, it also activates the regions of the brain that are tied to reward and pleasure — in other words, confidence just plain feels good. It not only is pleasurable for you, but confidence is also contagious to those around you. You could say it spreads positivity, connection, and heightened engagement to those in your immediate environment and beyond.
You may be thinking: “But what if confidence doesn’t come naturally to me?” Practice it anyway!
Like any personality trait, we can train our brain towards confidence by hardwiring our synapses with (what I like to call) “habits of positivity”. The first step involves self-awareness. By being aware of our negative inner voice, we can become mindful of these thought patterns and overcome them — leading to more positivity and confidence.
It’s important to note that self-awareness also applies to recognizing situations that can impede feelings of confidence, such as physical and mental exhaustion, stress, hormonal fluctuations, lack of quality sleep, and even neuroinflammation that can trigger depression and anxiety. When we are aware of these influences on any given day, we can take action to address these aspects to promote more positivity and confidence in our life.
A large part of this involves self-care, not only with our basic physical needs such as getting enough sleep, reducing stress, eating a healthful diet, and exercising, but also by journaling, practicing gratitude each day, and spending plenty of time in nature. See my Anxiety & Stress Tincture and Sleep Blend if you need extra support in these areas.
Building a Solid Foundation
We can also adopt simple habits that lay the groundwork for confidence. This can be anything from holding your head high (which sends a powerful confidence signal to your brain) to wearing clothing that makes you feel good.
Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone regularly is also a fantastic confidence builder. How so? Because with each success you begin to trust in your own capability and resilience. Take for example a physical challenge, such as beginning weight-lifting training at your local gym. Everything is new — from the environment to the people and the exercises. It’s uncomfortable. But as you learn how to use the equipment and build strength, you gain confidence in your ability and continue to build upon it. Before long, you strike up conversations with those around you and cultivate friendships. In short, you have pushed yourself outside of your comfort zone and triggered the reward and pleasure center of your brain by mastering a new skill and expanding your social circle.
Another highly recommended habit to encourage confidence is to begin and end your day with gratitude. A simple way to do this is to keep a gratitude journal where you write down at least three things you are grateful for in your life. Sincere appreciation is key. By doing so, we are rewiring our brains towards positivity and, you guessed it, confidence.
