Are EMFs Destroying Your Sleep?

Are EMFs Destroying Your Sleep?

How EMFs Impact Health

Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) are not something we typically give much thought to in our modern age, but the health impacts are real. We are constantly surrounded by these electric and magnetic charged particles from our devices, wifi, bluetooth, powerlines, appliances, radio signals, and smart meters. While we have always had a certain amount of exposure throughout history from the sun and the earth’s magnetic field, man-made EMFs have risen exponentially through the development of technology in the past century. Considering the brain is sensitive to EMFs, this is concerning — especially since exposure has been linked to sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, and more.

Electro-Pollution and You

Classified as a type of electro-pollution, EMFs are all but impossible to avoid. With the launch of Starlink and 5G wireless, our exposure has increased dramatically. This can lead to disruptions in how clearly you think, how efficiently you perform, and how energetic you feel. Trevicia Williams Ph.D. drives the point home in her Psychology Today post, “An Unsuspecting Link to Sleep Deprivation and Stress”:

“Sleep is disturbed due to the pineal gland’s interpretation of radiation as light and therefore interferes with the creation of melatonin (“the sleep hormone”). EMF radiation also affects when you wake up due to disruptions in circadian rhythms.”1

She also notes that Robert O. Becker, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee and the author of Body Electric, has observed the body is designed to be similar to the Earth in that natural magnetic waves radiate from the core. But when man-made EMFs tip the scale, it creates disruptive excess and turns it into electro-pollution that is harmful to the body’s cells.

Likewise, Sam Milham MD and author of Dirty Electricity has researched the effect high frequencies and electromagnetic interferences in the workplace and home have on the human body. He found that this “dirty electricity” causes sleep disturbance, a majority of diseases — including cancer — and death.1

Moreover, a study published in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine found that workers exposed to low-frequency electromagnetic fields experienced significant negative effects. The team concluded, “This study suggests that long-term occupational exposure to ELF-EMF may lead to depression, stress, anxiety, and poor sleep quality.” 2

EMFs can also impact metabolic pathways. A 2010 animal study established that adult male Sprague-Dewey rats who were exposed to ELF-EMFs (either short or long-term) experienced stress-related hormonal reactions, elevated blood glucose levels, and depressive-like behavior.3

Moreover, electromagnetic radiation affects neurotransmitters in the brain, including 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), serotonin, and GABA . These are “calming” neurotransmitters and are associated with mood, learning, cognition, memory, pain, sleep, and body temperature. Exposure to EMFs has been shown to influence the metabolism of these neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to a decrease in learning and memory.4

How to Minimize Exposure

In light of these findings, the next question most likely on your mind is how to protect you and your family from EMFs. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Consider using a wired ethernet connection instead of wifi. If you opt for Wi-Fi, turn it off at night during sleeping hours.
  • Keep devices on airplane mode when not in use.
  • Turn off bluetooth when not needed.
  • Don’t use your cell phone as an alarm clock — it’s best to avoid having it in your bedroom while sleeping.
  • Consider purchasing low-EMF appliances.
  • Use wired headphones instead of bluetooth.
  • Limit the time you spend on devices.

I also recommend spending as much time in nature as possible and walking barefoot on grass, along the beach, or on plain ground. You can read more about why this connection to the earth can help to deflect the harmful effects of man-made EMFs here.
