Hi Nicole, my mother has been dealing with migraine headaches her whole life. I’ve started telling her about you and your apothecary items on your website. We looked for something that might be good for easing migraines but didn’t see anything specific. Do you have any suggestions for natural remedies she can try?
Hello and thank you for reaching out with your question. You’re right, I don’t currently have anything in the apothecary designed around relief of migraines and headaches, but I can offer a few suggestions for how to help your mom alleviate the discomfort of her migraine headaches in the meantime.
In my travels to the many Traditional Skills Gatherings I participate in each year, I’ve learned that inhaling the smoke from Diamond Willow Fungus (Haploporous odoratus) has helped a LOT of people with migraines when absolutely nothing else does.
Also, she could try inhaling Lavender Oil. Put a few drops on her hands and rub them together, then have her cup her hands around her mouth and nose and breathe in deeply a few times. Direct application of Peppermint Oil to the temples and forehead has been reported to help ease migraine symptoms as well.
Many people report that small amounts of caffeine can help with migraines, as well as Magnesium Oxide. Other supplements and herbs that are reported to be helpful with headaches in general are: Feverfew, Butterbur, and Vitamin B12.
In general, I would say to tell her to stay well-hydrated and avoid migraine-triggering foods such as MSG (Monosodium Glutamate – you’d be surprised just how many everyday processed foods this is in!), nitrates, chocolate, red wine, processed foods, etc.
I hope this helps!
